This is Karma right here, Su gave her mom and sister a hard time and never apologized for it, now her adopted daughter is treating her the same way and now Su feel's the anger, hurt and disappointment she made her mom and sister feel.

That's how I saw Kuvira's arc with Su, Kuvira's actions towards her is kinda like payback.

Hmmm passive aggressive combat!

Is it strange that I never quite warmed up to Su as character?

Not everyone warms up to Su, true, especially after book 4 brought out the faults in her. That said, she can be an interesting character. =]

Su can be an interesting character.  She has all these cool aunt moments but maybe I'm getting hung up on the fact that they treat Lin's issues with both her and their mother as "that's so trivial in the long run get over it".

They could have been addressed better, yeah. I felt that Lin forgave Su and Toph not because they necessarily earned her forgiveness, but because she needed to let go of the negative energy she carried into adulthood as it related to her bitterness over Su and having her concerns dismissed by her mother.

True enough.  You make a good point that neither of them earned any forgiveness and clearly they felt no need address Lin's issues so Lin just had to drop it.  With that in mind I certainly understand now why Lin doesn't visit or correspond with the rest of the Beifong family.  That said Su taking back her war criminal son and instantly forgiving him nearly made me flip a table.

On one hand, it's disheartening to see Lin's concerns over Su and her mom so easily dismissed (she has valid reasons for being upset with her family). On the other hand, I understand how forgiving her family can be a step towards self-healing, because living with bitterness never does good.

You know Suyin is at least a little responsible for the Metal Empire. If she had just taken control of the situation at very start, like they wanted her too, none this would have happen. And then she got angry at Kuvira for doing what she should have done, which was saving the Earth Kingdom from total anarchy. So yes Suyin is responsible for the Earth Empire.

It'd be interesting to see an alternate version of the story where Su took command and helped the Earth Nation, whatever her reasons may have been. I wonder what would have been Kuvira's role then. Possibly a stabilizing force, under Su.

Do they ever explain Su's reasons for not taking command? Was it because she didn't want to help the earth prince? Did she think violent anarchy in the capital was fine? Or is she really just a massive hypercritic who just wants rule over her city as a monarch while everything around her burns? I'm voting number three.

Su explains it in episode 5 of book 4, when she tells Kuvira that the Metal Clan would be "seen as conquerors and greeted with nothing but war" if they physically intervened to restore stability. She also mentions not being interested in imposing her ideals (Zaofu's way of life, her disdain in the monarchy, etc.) on the entirety of the Earth Nation.

That is kind of stupid. How did she think the Earth Kingdom was going to reunite without at least a little violence? Even Korra had tried to fix the Earth Kingdom she still would have needed an army to help out since she couldn't be everywhere. And she didn't have to impose her ideas on the rest of the Earth Kingdom, she could have left it up to a vote after she reunited her nation.

Su understood there would be force involved in reuniting the Earth kingdom, which explains her hesitancy to step in (with the threat of relief efforts being seen as hostile). The situation after the Earth Queens' death seemed pretty volatile--shifting power so suddenly from a monarchy to a democracy would likely bring with it challenges.

So she understood what was needed, but still didn't have the back bone to follow through? Su is really just a coward who was willing to let people die as long as it didn't effect her.

Agree. While Kuvira definetely became evil, if Su did at least something to help Eatyh Kingdom, so much more harm could be prevented. I have read a fic when Su was called on it and quite hard. What's more , she accepted it and became better. Here's the link, if someone's interested m.fanfiction.net/s/10939176/1/

Many years after the final battle against the Colossus, the hostilities between Kuvira and Suyin has cooled to the point where they now just buy each other passive aggressive Sweaters for Christmas.

At this point its a game. The first one who refuses to wear the sweater loses. And they both know that.

"Why is Su a jerk mom?" She is essentially Kuvira's adoptive mother.

Suyin has been more of a guardian/ caretaker figure for Kuvira, and the latter has never truly considered family despite Suyin's claim that she was "like a daughter to her". Not to imply that a close tie didn't exist at some point, but the aggression they've felt one towards the other hasn't left them in good standing. So "jerk mom" in light of this aggression and in the sense that Suyin was never the "mother" figure that Kuvira likely hoped she'd be.
